Bethany Beyond Jordan

P1040597P1040642

Yesterday we visited Bethany beyond Jordan, the site identified for centuries as the place where John the Baptist baptised Jesus in the waters of the Jordan River. It was an interesting experience travelling from Petra, through Amman to Bethany beyond Jordan. The area is about 350 metres below sea level so the travel through the hills and valleys reveals an extraordinary landscape – dry and barren for the most part, but with plenty of settlement along the way. Irrigation provides the opportunity for growing bananas, vegetables and oranges in particular.
The place of the baptism has remnants of archaeological digs that are preserved and many new churches dotted through the area.
We walked down to the river and took off our shoes and put our feet into the very cold water.
For me there was a sadness in the experience – the whole day really – as I kept having the thought that Mum would love to see these photos and hear about my journey; so I kept her in mind all day. Today (31st) is Dad’s birthday, so he will be in my mind. This thought about Mum in one sense makes the trip just a bit more meaningful in that it adds another dimension to what is a trip to be experienced on so many levels.
After returning to Amman we visited ‘The Citadel of Amman’ which has archaeological remains of very early settlement from Neolithic, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times. It was very interesting. One could view from the citadel a Greek amphitheatre, and on the citadel was the remains of a Roman temple.
The view of Amman from the Citadel was also spectacular. One runs out of superlatives to describe this place and the experience.

I’m here in Jordan

P1040438P1040573After a long and somewhat tedious flight which did not engender much sleep, I arrived in Dubai, met the group and travelled to Amman, met our guide and transport and headed off into the desert of Jordan. What a different world this is! Yesterday we travelled through Madaba to reach our destination – Petra. This place is truly amazing. Words just do not describe the place, so I’ll need to reflect a bit more before I attempt to interpret the experience. So for now I’ll stick to the purely tourist highlights – the ride on the donkey, and the ride on the horse – which was free, but a hefty tip was expected (and asked for!)
We gathered before dinner to reflect on our experience and insights. This will be a spectacular trip – but an exhausting one if today was anything to go by!

My next adventure

It’s a while since I made a post on this site…but I have a new adventure on the horizon. I’m off to Jordan and Israel after Christmas. This has been on my ‘bucket list’ for some time – since I was at school really! It’s a study tour, so it will be more challenging than just being a tourist. There will be lots to see and much to write about. It is my hope that this adventure will be every bit as uplifting and challenging as my pilgrimage to Ireland in 2012. I’m blessed to be able to undertake these spiritual adventures; combining travelling with learning, and with one’s spiritual tradition is truly something for which to be grateful.

Renewal

Spring is really in the air here in Brisbane. It is crisp in the mornings and warm during the day. It promises to be a long, hot summer. I’m not keen on summer, but it does mean time spent in the garden over winter will show signs of progress. I’ve seeded the grass in the hope that the patches where the weeds once were will sprout new shoots. I’ve been edging the garden and putting in some decorative features, and look forward to lazy afternoons enjoying a wine to refresh the spirits after a day’s work.

Work has been going well, and I continue to feel inspired by the story of Catherine McAuley and other sisters who worked for the poor and disadvantaged. I am constantly reminded of their generosity and hospitality, and hope to build that into my own lifestyle.

Today is my daughter’s 34th birthday. I am, like many women my age, amazed by how quickly time passes. Our lives seem but a heartbeat in the expanse of the timeless universe. My two daughters are beautiful and I am blessed with beautiful grandchildren.

I continue to renew my ideas about life, love and family as I grow older, hoping to become wiser in the process. My friends continue to support me on this journey!

The garden and the piano

Well, things are still going well in the garden and on the piano! I’ve maintained my resolve to both, and have signs of progress. The garden is established and I’m ready to develop the next stage in preparation for Spring in a little over a months time. And the piano is coming along as well, though I must admit to not enjoying ‘scales’. It’s a bit like ’50 First Dates’…my fingers seem to forget where they are! It’s like everytime I begin I’m having to learn over again!

For some years now I have been suffering from leaking cerebro spinal fluid, which has had a terrible impact on my lifestyle. I have dreadful headaches and have not been able to do many of the things I love to do. Lately though, I have seen a marked improvement, so I’m hopeful that I’m on the mend, even though my latest MRI says that the leak is still present.

My quest for a more peaceful, productive life continues!

The Garden

I have set myself two projects this year – things that will continue to nourish my body, mind and soul – to learn to play the piano and construct a garden! Both of these are things I have always wanted to do but somehow life got in the way – children, no money, work! I turned 60 last month and decided that now was the time for both projects. So I bought a piano for my birthday, and asked my family and friends if they wished to give me a plant that would have a special place in the garden…and they did, so now I have some plants to start and the willing assistance of my husband to do the heavy work. We have begun by preparing the soil, scoping the work and planting the starter plants. Easter weekend – certainly a time for renewal and new life – we began work on a retaining block wall, and it will be finished this weekend I hope. That will give our garden some ‘bones’. Over the next few weeks I’ll post some photos of the garden as it emerges. As we are moving into winter I don’t expect to see much new growth, but if we can get the basics in place during the cooler months, spring should be fantastic!

Many thanks to those who have encouraged, inspired and gifted me with plants and wisdom over these past few months. I hope that the garden might be a part of my continuing journey of growth.

Nearly twelve months!

Well it is nearly twelve months since I left Brisbane for Ireland. Where has the time gone? The last twelve months has been a great time in many ways, and very challenging in others. I returned from Ireland uplifted by the experience of the spiritual and physical journey. I enjoyed the companions in the group, our interactions and our sense of being on a significant journey together for the good of the ministries which we all serve. And much has happened since!
I was aware during my time in Ireland that my health was not as robust as it should be. I had been suffering terrible headaches – which I had put down to being busy, excited, carrying luggage etc! The headaches persisted well beyond the pilgrimage and eventually I sought a solution. Having said that, I had been complaining about these headaches to my doctor for a good twelve months previously, but with no real relief or diagnosis.
Long story short – I have intercranial hypotension! Caused by a cerebrospinal fluid leak somewhere in my spinal cord. Many MRIs and CT scans later and four epidural blood patches later, and I am beginning to find some relief. Hopefully this will continue. It has been a painful, harrowing and disconcerting time.

Home Again!

The road home!

This is the driveway of Eagle Hill Farm in Kildare. The B&B was very good, and a great way to spend the last night in Ireland – with an Irish family on a working farm. Unfortunately, I left my mobile phone there and I’m still hoping that it will appear one day in the mail!

The trip from Kildare to Dublin is only about an hour’s duration, and it was a good trip in! The motorway took me straight to the hire car company and then a short taxi trip to the airport.

This blog has been about a journey – a pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is a powerful concept that is common to many religions and ideological movements, and denotes more than a holiday. And I feel that this journey has been for me a journey not just to the heart of the Catherine McAuley, but a journey into my own spirituality and religious tradition – both of which I understand better.

It is my hope that I will be able to continue this journey – to take it forward cognisant of the wealth of tradition and heritage that sits behind it. The Mercy Partners story: http://www.mercypartners.org.au will be a continuation of the Catherine McAuley story, and an important part of my continuing journey.

It is my hope also that I will be able to continue this blog – to write the story of the pilgrim.

The road home is just the next small step in this endeavour.

Tonight is my last night in Ireland

Well, I’m sitting in my cosy B&;B in Kildare, with a glass of Chilean red wine, enjoying the comfort of this lovely little place! I drove from Mallow this morning, via Limerick, and stopped at some small towns and villages along the way. I drove back into Kildare village for an early dinner, as I did not want to be driving these lanes in the dark. My accommodation is close to the Irish National Stud and The Curragh Racecourse. It is called Eagle Hill Farm. Very well set up. Beautiful country.

The weather has been wet and cold these last few days. The outside temperature most of the day was 8degrees! Cold. But not unbearable. At present it is 6.30 and I’m seeing the first sunshine for a couple of days.

Kildare has a shopping outlet town…bit like Harbour Town, and I went there but it was a bit miserable in the wet!

Driving on the motorways here is very easy and efficient, with light to moderate traffic and not too many trucks. The small roads, lanes and tracks are quite another thing! Very challenging indeed, especially in the wet.

My car has to be back at Avis by midday, then it is off to the airport and bound for home via Heathrow and Singapore. I’ll be home Sunday morning. I have to admit,be time has not been long enough to really get into this country, so I’ll have to come back.

The pilgrimage was wonderful, and I feel quite spiritually refreshed, and the time away has given me some real insights that I hope will stay with me. I miss my family of course, and I’ve been challenged traveling alone! Bit scary at times.

The photos show my B&B and Kildare town.

Now the challenge is to get packed and not have overweight luggage!

Food, glorious food!

Well, the Irish provide lots of food, but it is not always the best! It tends to be fully of potatoes – not kidding, you can have two or three different potato dishes or sides in the same meal! I won’t need to have another potato for months!

Tonight I had really good chips, thes best I’ve had in Ireland – and the toughest steak I’ve had for a while! With garlic butter! and onions and mushrooms!

Cork is very different from Dublin, and Mallow and surrounding villages quite traditional. The towns are characterised by narrow streets, and old buildings! There appear to be some new shopping centres, but these are not in the old cities but rather on the outskirts.

I’ve enjoyed meeting the Sisters in the convents. They are quite elderly, very welcome and really gentle, lovely women.

Tomorrow, I will do some touring, before returning to Dublin for the flight home. Sad to be finishing this journey, but glad to be heading for homee. Miss everone!
